BAPTISED BY FIRE

by Jack Hywel-Davies

The Life Story of the healing Evangelist Smith Wigglesworth 1859-1947

I have had the privilege of reading other biographies of Wigglesworth and this is by far the best. It is refreshing to read the story of a man who, without human refinement and education, was able to tap the infinite resources of God.
I was personally blessed in reading this story.

Eldin Corsie
Principal of ELim Bible College, at Capel in the 1980s, UK.

Jack Hywel-Davies
Jack had a distinguished career in publishing as Managing Director of UK Coverdale Publishers (a subsidiary of Tyndale started by Dr Kenneth Taylor - who translated the Living Bible - as Jack's boss, Taylor encouraged Jack to publish Like a Mighty Wind the story of the Indonesian Revival - in the 1960s - by Mel Tari)). Later Coverdale became Kingsway. Jack also presented the BBC's Radio 4 Morning Has Broken.

I have loved reading how this man who loved Jesus and people, grew in faith from not knowing if Jesus still heals today, to bringing people to healing meetings a town away (to Leeds when he was in Bradford), then to be thrust into leading one of these meetings, then to be directed to pray himself and see miracles and on to being invited all over the world (in the age before flying everywhere) and, in the process, prepare the Christian world for the Pentecostal movement (in New Zealand), the charismatic movement worldwide and being called the apostle of faith...

Preamble by eBook publisher
(as found in the initial pages)

JAROM BOOKS is the publishing imprint of Jacques More. This title written by Jack Hywel-Davies is authorized as an eBook only. Hodder and Stoughton were the first publishers in the UK in print. Jack was an Elim Pentecostal man who was part of the pastoral team at Kensington Temple, London. Jack was managing director of Coverdale House Publishers, a subsidiary of Tyndale House founded by Dr Kenneth Taylor, the translator of the Living Bible. Coverdale House then became Kingsway Publications and was later sold to Kingsway Trust in 1979. He had his own national BBC radio 4 show Morning has broken involving hymns and songs, a testament to his Welsh musical background. As you read this work, you will note he is responsible for Kingsway publishing Like a Mighty Wind in the UK. The story of amazing miracles and revival in 1965 on the island of Timor, Indonesia.

I met him first while I worked for Elim Bible College as a maintenance mechanic during its final years at Capel, Surrey, UK. He helpfully corrected me on an English grammar rule whilst I co-edited a College student mag called The Babble. I never forgot that rule. He gave me a copy of his book, this present title, there and then. That may have been the first time I had heard of Smith Wigglesworth.

We remained friends and after his promotion (as the Salvation Army puts it) and knowing the value of this book and that it was now "out of print", I later asked Joan his widow for the rights to publish this as an eBook. See also my introduction to the third appendix.

I have added a few notes here and there to help the current reader, like [20th century] for example, to explain the author's meaning since this title was first published in 1982.

As part of this edition I have added for the interested reader two of my own articles that explain separately What is Baptism in the Holy Spirit? and Speaking in tongues to help assist in the ongoing understanding of these things. I have made these into Appendix 3 and 4 respectively. They, of course in themselves are not required reading nor do they give any further insight into the life of Smith Wigglesworth.

Jack's work is all the more valuable by giving a good insight of Wigglesworth's growth in faith and belief in healing. He has added valuable insight into the beginning of modern Pentecostalism and as such this work is also a resource for those who study modern church history. I quote here - taken from the back of Hodder's book - the words of Eldin Corsie a previous Principal of Elim Bible College who, as a neighbour of mine in the 1990s was a customer in my days as a self-employed car mechanic, "I have had the privilege of reading other biographies of Wigglesworth and this is by far the best."

CORRECTION NOTE
Whilst Eldin Corsie was Principal of Elim Bible College at Capel, in Surrey, UK, whilst I worked there as a Maintenance Mechanic, he was not a neighbour of mine as mentioned. I was referring to a predecessor as Principal of Elim Bible College, the late Wesley Gilpin who was my near neighbour in Dorking, Surrey. This is my error.
